About the Child Safety Blog (CSB)
What
-- The mission of this site is to be a central location where parents
can go to find information about child safety. It is intended to be a
starting point for parents interested in staying abreast of current
child safety issues. The CSB will have updated information regarding
recalls, child safety news, best safety practices, state-of-the-art
products, as well as opinions about everything related to child
safety. While the site will have tips about major topics such as toys,
water safety, and safety in and around cars, it will also have links to
the best websites for each of these topics. So, by coming here first,
a parent can be confident that this site will have already done the
research to find the best, most recent child safety information.
Who -- This CSB was created and will be maintained by Bryan Slaughter, an attorney with Michie, Hamlett, Lowry Rasmussen & Tweel in Charlottesville, Virginia. Bryan devotes his practice to helping people who have been seriously injured by corporations who have acted negligently or have produced dangerous products. Over the years, more and more of Bryan clients have been children who have been needlessly injured.
Bryan and his wife Jennifer are parents to four wonderful kids (they're the ones in the pictures above). When he's not working, he's spending time with his family and occasionally playing hockey. He also is president of the board of directors of the Ronald McDonald House of Charlottesville.
Why -- I find it meaningful to be able to help children who have been hurt, but it would be far more fulfilling to have a hand in preventing injuries before they happen, and that's why I started this blog. Through my work, I constantly see what is safe and what is not. I see patterns of injuries to children -- the same thing happening over and over. Children, as well as parents, simply don't appreciate many dangers until it is too late. By raising awareness, I hope to help stop injuries before they ever occur.
This site will be a work in progress. If you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to leave a comment.
When -- Hopefully, we'll be up and running by the end of Fall 2008... Keep checking back for updated information!

Hi - the Child Safety Blog seems like the perfect website to help us promote our helmet safety and use website, onlyhelmets.com. How much would it cost to post a text link on your site back to our page for six months? If you could provide us a quick quote, that would be wonderful.
Thanks, and once we hear back from you, we can hopefully work out details that suit both parties.
Here's to helmet wearing!
Cheers,
Brett

Brett, please contact me at pmay@michiehamlett.com to discuss this, thanks!

I would like to inform you of the facts and evidence that supports the potential for a certain type of product to cause one of the most intense form of pain that children are forced to endure, of exposed tooth dentin (nerves) in teeth. This involves certain types of power toothbrushes that are designed for children as Disney characters and other toy type shapes, and operate in spinning-rotating type motions.
http://www.studiodentaire.com/en/glossary/dentin.php
The above link is a picture of the crown, root and dentin of a tooth shows that the hard enamel only extends to just below the gum tissue. Dental professionals have verified factors that results in this layer of gum tissue to become damaged 1- by using improper brushing motions that would push back and away horizontally at this tissue 2- is using too much pressure while brushing 3- is in brushing aggressively or excessively. All 3 factors are evident while using these certain types of power toothbrushes
The dental term TOOTHBRUSH ABRAISION is when the underlying layer of your teeth -- the dentin -- becomes exposed as a result of receding gum tissue (the protective blanket that covers the tooth roots). The roots under this soft thin layer of gum tissue which are not covered by hard enamel contain thousands of tiny tubules leading to the tooth's nerve center (the pulp). These dentinal tubules (or channels) allow the hot, cold, or sweet food -- to reach the nerve in your tooth, which results in this intense pain.
As you now are aware of the factors of toothbrush abrasion while using a non-power, or manual type toothbrush, with as many motions as children may be able to do manually per every minute of brushing teeth that has the potential to expose the tooth dentin, then it is undisputable when using a power toothbrush that operates at approximately 5,000 to over 8,000 motions per every minute they are being used, will multiply damage that cannot be duplicated while brushing manually per the same minutes use. I have a letter from a dental specialist who states that once this damage done throughout the teeth it is permanent, with no feasible way to correct or reverse it.
The additional damage that may accrue and be multiplied when using this certain type power toothbrush as directed, that cannot be duplicated manually per the same minutes use, is in not having control of the spinning/rotating/osculating mechanical motions, that may have the potential to spin/push horizontally back and away at the gum tissue exposing the tooth dentin. (Other power toothbrushes operate in vibrating motions that by themselves would not result in this damage.)
Any slight additional pressure used while brushing with these certain power toothbrushes that do not have the pressure sensors of other similar power toothbrushes, will also be multiplied in a manner that cannot be duplicated while brushing manually per the same minutes use. Children as young as 3 years of age do not have the awareness of adults that they may be using this slight amount of additional pressure while using these high speed power toothbrushes
Brushing teeth at approximately 5000 to 8000 motions per every minute use is the definition of aggressively or excessively brushing teeth and these companies advertize that children use then over 30 percent longer than manual toothbrushes, as in the example below.
This example of an advertisement of power toothbrushes mostly used by children shows the operating action (combining stationary with high-speed oscillating bristles) and advertizes that children tend to use them longer which will further multiply any potential damage that cannot be duplicated while brushing manually. - Crest Kids SpinBrush - Product Details: Power Toothbrush Uses Spinning head, multi-level bristles. All SpinBrush for Kid brushes come with smaller brush heads for smaller mouths. Each unique design combines stationary bristles with high-speed oscillating bristles Research shows that children tend to brush longer by 38.3%, when using the SpinBrush relative to manual toothbrushes they come in fun shapes for kids, like Disney Princess and Spider-Man to name a few. (These have No Built-in pressure sensors)
This evidence further shows the speed (in this example of 8,800 motions per minute) and the certain type of operating action of rotating, oscillating that may, with extended use spin/push back and away where the soft gum tissue tapers down to a very thin layer to meet the teeth. This evidence also shows that a pressure sensor has been included in this product that has the same operating action of the Disney or Marvel character power toothbrushes, which again do not have pressure sensors to prevent one factor of toothbrush abrasion, of using to much pressure that is multiplied while using a power toothbrush.- Oral-B® Professional Care® 1000 Oscillating-Rotating Technology Built-In Pressure Sensor 8,800 Oscillations per Minute.
I have contacted the FDA with these facts and supporting evidence, who is the Federal agency that regulates these devices, and who has taken action over other products based on known facts or factors without it being necessary for these specific products to be recorded on any data base, website, or other study’s, and which would be invalid and overruled by these known facts. I have also contacted your States US Senators and Representatives with this information that have case work websites devoted to helping resolve issues that affect their constituents with Federal agencies.
The FDA has acknowledged that overly aggressive brushing may be detrimental to ones health, but has not yet taken any action. Please contact them and ask them to recall these certain types of spinning-rotating-osculating types of power toothbrushes that do not have pressure sensors. Please also contact you US Senators and Representatives to ask that they help to prevent this potential for permanent painful injury to millions of children who are continuing to use these certain power toothbrushes, along with informing other parents by any means possible.
Thank you

Thanks for sharing this information. I wasn't aware of this problem with power toothbrushes.
